Background of the Study
Bipolar disorder is a chronic mental health condition characterized by extreme mood swings, including episodes of mania and depression. Effective management of this condition often requires a multifaceted approach, including medication, psychoeducation, and psychotherapy. Family therapy has emerged as a valuable intervention in managing bipolar disorder, focusing on enhancing communication, resolving conflicts, and providing psychoeducation within family units (Smith et al., 2024).
In Nigeria, the influence of family dynamics is particularly significant due to the centrality of family in the social structure. However, the potential of family therapy as an adjunctive treatment for bipolar disorder has been underutilized in clinical settings. At Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Sokoto State, understanding the impact of family therapy on treatment outcomes can provide insights into its integration into standard care practices.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the documented benefits of family therapy in improving treatment adherence and reducing relapse rates in bipolar disorder patients, it remains underexplored in Nigerian mental health care. Patients at Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Sokoto State, often face challenges such as stigma, poor family support, and high relapse rates, which hinder their recovery process.
The lack of empirical studies evaluating the effectiveness of family therapy in this context creates a gap in knowledge. This study aims to examine the role of family therapy in improving clinical outcomes for patients with bipolar disorder and provide evidence-based recommendations for its application.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the effect of family therapy on the relapse rates of patients with bipolar disorder.
2. To evaluate the impact of family therapy on treatment adherence among these patients.
3. To explore the influence of family therapy on the overall quality of life of patients.
Research Questions
1. What is the effect of family therapy on relapse rates among bipolar disorder patients?
2. How does family therapy influence treatment adherence?
3. What is the impact of family therapy on patients' quality of life?
Research Hypotheses
1. Family therapy significantly reduces relapse rates among patients with bipolar disorder.
2. Family therapy positively impacts treatment adherence among patients.
3. Family therapy improves the quality of life of bipolar disorder patients.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on patients with bipolar disorder and their families receiving care at Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Sokoto State, between 2023 and 2025. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported data from family members and challenges in isolating the effects of family therapy from other treatments.
